10 Benefits of Studying the Bible

1. Studying the Bible causes growth and maturity

1 Peter 2.2-3: … as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Hebrews 5.11-14: … of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

2. God’s Word gives us spiritual effectiveness

2 Timothy 3.16-17: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

» Doctrine/Teaching: thinking

» Rebuke: defines boundaries

» Correction: purifies, cleanses, & conforms us to His will

» Training in Righteousness: reveals how we are to live

» Equipped for every good work

3. The Bible is our source of Truth – it gives us guidance and wisdom

Psalm 119:105: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Joshua 1:8: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

4. Scripture trains us in righteousness and purity

Psalm 119:9, 11: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. … Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.

5. The Bible produces delight and joy within us

Psalm 119:15-16: I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.

Psalm 16:8,11: I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. … You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 19:10: [Scripture is] more to be desired than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

John 15:11: These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

6. The Word of God gives us assurance of salvation

1 John 5:13: These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

John 20.31: but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

7. The Word produces cleansing and sanctification

John 15:3: You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

John 17.17: Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

8. The Bible gives us peace

John 16:33: These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

9. God’s Word helps us in prayer

John 15:7: If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

10. The Word of God produces victory and success in our lives

1 John 2:14: I have written to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,
And you have overcome the wicked one.

Joshua 1.8: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

11. BONUS: I study the Bible so that I might know Jesus … not merely desiring information about Him but increase the intimacy I have with Him

John 1.1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
