3 Ways to Develop and Live a Life of Thankfulness

  1. Turn upward – spend time daily praising and thanking God for who He is, what He has done, and what He means in your life
  2. Turn outward – purposefully find ways to thank and bless others (even for small things) … for example write or verbally tell someone how grateful you are for them, what they have done, or how you see God working in their lives
  3. Turn inward (reflect) – journal or record your gratitude and thanksgiving daily or weekly. For a suggestion and template on how to do this, check out Episode 43: How to Journal Consistently and Easily

Other Notes

  • Old Testament Usage – thanksgiving is closely tied to the verb “to bless” and the Hebrew word for “thanks” (תּוֹדָה, todah) is derived from the verb “to praise or confess.”
  • New Testament Usage – thanksgiving (εὐχαριστία, eucharistia)is tied to the idea of “grace”—in fact, most of the Greek words for thanks, thanksgiving, thankful, are all from the same root word as “grace” (χάρις charis).
  • The Greek word often translated “give thanks” is the word eucharisteō, which is where we get the word Eucharist … what is commonly understood as the Lord’s Supper. Thus Communion (Lord’s Supper/Eucharist) is the act of praising and thanking God for His saving work upon the Cross on our behalf.
