Do you yearn for victory from sin yet never seem to obtain it?
Many Christians today either assume victory is impossible or have become disillusioned that they are one of the unlucky few who will never experience it.
Yet the New Testament is replete with the concept that you are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37) and “thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).
The Christian life is not one filled with sin and defeat.
If we are filled with the life of Christ, via the Holy Spirit, then you can have freedom from sin. But we first must take sin seriously in our lives.
Victory in the Life of David
I love the life of David.
Every time I study his life, I am pressed into greater intimacy with Jesus.
Recently, while studying, I noticed that prior to David’s downfall and sin with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11, the writer of 2 Samuel goes out of his way to emphasize that David was blameless. Throughout First and Second Samuel, there is absolutely no defeat in David’s life … none.
Was David perfect, without sin? Obviously not. He had a sin nature and no doubt fell into sin throughout his life—but it is as if the writer of Samuel overlooks everything to show the great contrast of David’s life prior to the sin with Bathsheba and the sin that took place that fateful night.
Whether it be a physical battle or a spiritual conflict—there is only victory and triumph for David. Nothing can touch this guy!
As you come to 2 Samuel chapter eight through ten, an emphasis jumps off the page:
And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
(2 Samuel 8:6)
And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
(2 Samuel 8:14)
Preserved: A Life of Yasha
The word “preserved” in the passages above is the Hebrew word “yasha.” Yasha contains the idea “to be saved, delivered, or be victorious.” Some translations say: “And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.”
One tremendous reality of Bible Study is that what is happening physically (in the external) of the Old Testament is a picture of what is to now take place spiritually (in the internal) of our lives now. Yes, the Old Testament stories are all true and historical—but they also showcase Jesus Christ and what He desires to take place in our lives now.
Like David, we too should have absolutely no defeat in ANY area of our life!
Our lives should be a testimony to the greatness, glory, grace, grit, gusto, and grandeur of our majestic Lord and King!
The world around us should be able to look at our lives and proclaim: “The Lord preserved, saved, delivered, and gave victory to ______ [insert your name here] wheresoever he [or she] went—in every aspect of their life.” I want that said about my life! I want that to experienced in my life!
I want that said about my life … but more so, I want to experience that reality in my life!
Do you have victory in EVERY area of your life? Is there anything you need to be saved or delivered from? If so, God desperately desires to bring forth such a victory in your life! Go after Jesus and ask Him to make you more than a conqueror (see Romans 8:37) and to be your victory in every circumstance (see 1 Corinthians 15:57).
