The group began to gather in the Chicago O’Hare airport several hours before takeoff, Monday evening. With quiet anticipation, we began to meet and get to know one another – this band of adventurers and lovers of Christ who are stepping into a world a bit unlike our own to see, understand, and experience the depths of God’s Word in the very locations it took place.
We boarded the 777 airliner of Turkish Air and rose into the sky with our eyes set upon Israel. Our late night flight helped to pass time by getting a few minutes of restless sleep, but after this 10.5 hour fight, we all debarked in the brand new Istanbul, Turkey airport (the largest airport in the world right now) a bit sleepy, stiff, and ready to finally arrive in the Holy Land.
After an hour in the Istanbul airport, we boarded our plane to Tel Aviv (which just so happened to be the same plane we rode on from Chicago to Istanbul) and landed Tuesday evening in the land of the Bible – welcomed by a fire-red vibrant sunset.
We welcomed a few additions to the group along the way – with Michaela Winter (from Germany) joining us in Istanbul … and Beate Kaiser (Germany), Liubov Akhunova (Russia), and David Hartman (USA) joining us once we landed in Israel.
After passing through passport control and gathering our bags, we hopped onto our tour bus to take the short ride to our hotel for our first official night in the Land.
Everyone seems a bit tired from the long travel day(s) but there is an expectancy and excitement in the air about what this study tour holds. So we are off to sleep, for tomorrow we officially start our tour of the Land.
