Memorizing Scripture is important. We’ve already talked about 10 reasons why you should memorize scripture and 6 quick tips to help you memorize. Today I want to turn to Scripture itself to see what it says about memorizing, meditating, hiding it within our lives, and knowing it intimately.
Meditation in Scripture is often misunderstood. In today’s world, meditation is all about emptying your mind so that you come to a state of relaxation and “consciousness,” but in Scripture, meditation is a critical concept and it has nothing with emptying our minds. Meditation is best understood by looking at cows.
Meditating Upon God’s Word Like a Cow
When a cow chews its cud, it chews for a bit, swallows, and then regurgitates the food to keep chewing. It keeps the process up: chew, swallow, spit it back up, chew swallow, regurgitate. The same is true when it comes to Scripture. We are to keep the Word of God in our hearts and mind. We are to soak in it, ruminate within its Truth, let it dwell within us richly, we are to ponder, think about, and focus upon it. We don’t empty our minds, we allow the Word of God to fill up our mind. Jesus and His Word is to be the delight and focus of our lives.
Here are ____ passages that talk about hiding God’s Word in your heart, to keep it at the center of your life, to meditate upon it day and night, and to delight in the Law of the Lord (Law here doesn’t necessarily mean the Levitical Law or the 10 Commandments but the words of God Himself … in essence, Scripture itself).
Take a few minutes to read through these Scriptures. May they be an encouragement and exhortation to your soul! Next week we will continue our study on how to memorize Scripture by looking at how to memorize passages around particular topics.
