Have you ever pondered the word “continually“? It has the idea of constancy, always happening, having no interruptions, around the clock, day and night, again and again, nonstop, incessantly, ceaselessly, endlessly, perpetually, eternally, 24-7. It almost makes you exhausted just thinking about the word. What would it mean to be continuous in something? Can you imagine yourself continually in bed? You would never once set your foot on the floor! What about continually eating? Never stopping the motion of putting fork to mouth. When would you ever have a reprieve? But there IS one thing that we are told to be continuous about and it should be a great joy and delight.
In Psalm 71, the psalmist declares that God is our Rock of Salvation! He says things like “You, O LORD, I put my trust … Deliver me in Your righteousness … Be my strong refuge … For You are my rock and my fortress … You are my hope, O LORD God; You are my trust from my youth.” What tremendous words of truth! But at the end of verse six, he proclaims: “My praise shall be continually of You!”
A continuous praise? A never ceasing, nonstop, incessantly, endlessly, perpetually, eternally, having no interruptions … of praise? Is that even possible?
In Revelation, we see the four living creatures who do not rest day or night as they lift high the majesty and glory of God, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4.8). A few verses later we read of the twenty-four elders who fall down before Him and cry out: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created” (Revelation 4.11). Oh to join in with such a chorus!
Does this sound like the most boring and detestable thing – continually uttering praise? Then you have never met Jesus. When you truly see Him, as He is, words cannot help but burst forth in praise! He is King of all kings, Lord of all lords, He sits high and exalted and is worthy of all praise! One look at His face melts hearts of stone, knees tremble and bend, and worship utters forth. He is pure-unadulterated love. Love! He is LOVE! Intimacy with Him causes His glory to shine forth through our faces. Nothing can stand against Him. Everything is under His feet – principalities, power, rulers, and authorities – nothing can touch Him. He stands unmovable as the triumphant victor! Oh to see Him as He truly is! With one look, we can not hold back the praise, adoration, and worship. Like the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders, to behold Him wells up praise that cannot be held in.
Oh that Jesus may become our entire focus, our single thought, our one desire! And like the psalmist, praise would be forever, continually, without relent be upon our lips. May our every word, our every thought, our every passion and desire today be consumed in praise and exaltation of our Lord and King Jesus!
