In Lesson 9 of the Deeper Christian Bible Study Series in Ephesians, we examine Paul’s statement that God has chosen us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him.

This in-depth study focuses on Ephesians 1:4 and discusses the two aspects of what it means to be “before God” and how we can practically live holy and blameless lives as Christians.

Passage: Ephesians 1:4
Holiness Nose-to-Nose

Ephesians 1:3-4 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love …

  • Two words for “before” in verse 4
    • “… He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world …”
      • Before: “pro” (a preposition meaning: before)
    • “… we should be holy and without blame before Him …”
      • Before: “katanôpion” (an adverb meaning: over against, before the face of, in the presence of, in the sight of)
      • katanôpion is two Greek words: against + before (literally: in the face of, or, having something before the eyes)
  • Two aspects of being “before Him”:
    • The Courtroom
    • The Cleansing
      • Oneness (with God) Produces & Reveals Holiness
      • Oneness (with God) Produces & Reveals Holiness … Which Defines Your Life
