Godly manhood is an important topic for the church to not only talk about, but to focus on.
Mike Curtis writes, “the young men of this generation are caught in the crosshairs of an enemy that wants to destroy them, neutralize them, or at least take them off the front lines of the battle.” But honestly, it’s not just young men who are disoriented, but men in general.
We live in a unique season of history. What Paul said about the end is ever-increasing before our eyes:
- 2 Timothy 3:1–5 – But know this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, without gentleness, without love for good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Keep away from such men as these.
- 2 Timothy 4:3–4 – For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
Paul indicates that humanity will turn from righteousness, godliness, and the way God designed things to a self-focus, self-indulgent, and sinful form of existence. And this is certainly true within manhood.
The solution to our cultural dilemma (for both masculinity and femininity) is found in Jesus and His work upon the cross. We must return to the authority of God’s Word, the standard He sets forth for manhood (and womanhood), repent of our wicked ways, and allow Him to bring us to the point “of the full knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ … we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is Christ” (Ephesians 4:13, 15).
Simply, we must be reforged into godly men for this hour.
There are several good books on godly manhood; helping men gain a biblical understanding of how God designed masculinity. There are a few that help fathers, pastors, and mentors pour into the next generation of men, calling them up to the standard of Scripture.
My friend Mike Curtis, a pastor and father of five, recently released a tremendous book to help disciple men in the biblical standard for masculinity. In Forging Godly Men: A Discipleship Manual for Dads and their Teenage Sons, Mike discusses ten key qualities of manhood that every Christian man should grow in. Though designed for fathers and sons, this discipleship resource is immensely helpful for any man (or group of men) to walk through—it is a study guide into Scripture to discover what godliness looks like and how we as men can live to the higher calling we have as Christians (though the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit).
Ten Qualities of Godly Manhood
Here are the ten qualities that Mike Curtis explores in his book:
- Godly men are passionate for God
- Godly men find their significance in Christ
- Godly men are full of integrity
- Godly men walk in freedom
- Godly men never give up in battle
- Godly men work hard
- Godly men love and serve others
- Godly men are humble and praise others
- Godly men build Christ-centered friendships
- Godly men are driven by a sense of divine destiny
If you are looking for a great resource to use to help disciple men in the area of godly manhood, Forging Godly Men is one you should consider. And because I love it so much, I am super excited to give away this book by Mike Curtis to five people.
