The world is pushing a message of doom and gloom. News, articles, and casual conversations are giving endless bait for fear, worry, and anxiety. What is a Christian to do?

In this episode, we discuss four ways to solve your fear and anxiety. You weren’t made to carry the weight of the world or the burdens of life—they will crush you. This is all the more reason we need the strength, peace, and empowerment of Jehovah Shalom, the “God of peace,” in our lives.

4 ways to solve your fear and anxiety

1. Focus

Paul reminds us to “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2).

The reality is, what you focus on will grow bigger and stronger in your life. This is why, regardless of the circumstance or situation, the trial or temptation, we must keep our gaze upon Jesus Christ. As Paul says in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

As a Christian, you are IN Christ—which means He is our security, our safety, our strong tower. Proverbs 18:10 tells us, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”

2. Eternal Mindset

We must live with eternity stamped upon our perspective. We must not live merely for the here-and-now but rather live with an eternal perspective. In the end, Jesus wins. He is the victor. So let us seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness … and “all these things” (food, clothing, etc) will be added to us (see Matthew 6).

3. Agree with Scripture

Richard Wurmbrand is famous for saying that there are 366 commands in Scripture to not fear—one for every day of the year, including leap year.

This is one of the most prevalent commands for every Christian—do NOT fear. This means, rather than consult our emotions, the circumstances, or how possible it may seem, we must come under, heed, and obey God’s Word not to fear. We must allow the Holy Spirit to be our boldness, courage, and grace for every occasion.

Sometimes we must command our soul to come into line with Scripture, as we see David do in Psalm 42:5, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation.”

If you need some help to get started, read through Philippians and the Psalms.

4. Roll the Burden Upon the Lord

We weren’t meant to carry the weight of the world upon our shoulders. While we must face trials, temptations, and the circumstances of life, we are called to cast (toss) all our cares and anxieties upon God because He cares for us (see 1 Peter 5:6-7).

Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

In Psalm 37:5a, God compares Himself to a pack animal that is made to carry heavy burdens. We are told, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act.” Here is what Charles Spurgeon said about the passage: “Commit [your] way unto the Lord. Roll the whole burden of life upon the Lord. Leave with Jehovah not [your] present fretfulness merely, but all [your] cares; in fact, submit the whole tenor of [your] way to him. Cast away anxiety, resign [your] will, submit [your] judgment, leave all with the God of all. What a medicine is this for expelling envy! […] How blessed must he be who lives every day in obedience to it!”

What if instead of carrying your own burdens of life, you rolled them upon the strong arm of our God? He alone is able to carry them.

Do you want to solve your fear, worry, and anxiety issues? Then as believers in God Almighty, we must keep Him as our focus, have an eternal perspective, agree with and obey Scripture, and roll the burden of our lives upon Christ. Though it sounds simple, it doesn’t mean it’s easy—which is why we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit every moment of every day.
