Many Christians read the Bible slowly, one chapter or a few verses at a time—but there are tremendous benefits to reading Scripture through quickly.
In this video, Nathan Johnson explains three important reasons every believer should consider reading through the Bible in 60, 90, or 120 days. Reading the Bible at a faster pace can help you see the grand storyline of Scripture, understand how the whole Bible points to Jesus Christ, and develop a deeper hunger for God’s Word.
If you have ever struggled to stay consistent in your Bible reading or wanted to better understand the overall message of Scripture, this teaching will help to inspire you with a fresh approach to reading God’s Word.

3 Reasons to Read the Bible Quickly
- You see the overarching story and timeline of Scripture – Scripture has one focus and emphasis: Jesus Christ. When you read the Bible through quickly, you see the entire forest (rather than a single tree) … and in so doing, you can better understand the singular story of Scripture, how things fit together, and ultimately, how it all points to Christ and Him crucified.
- You gain a deeper understanding of God’s character – when you see the Bible as a whole, and do so quickly, you begin to better grasp God’s compassion, graciousness, patience, mercy (lovingkindness), etc (see Exodus 34:6–7). You see God working throughout the ages and realize He is faithful and He does not change.
- You discover connections in Scripture that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise – when you read the Bible in such a short span of time, it allows you to see connections, foreshadows, and insights that are often missed when you read the Bible slowly
- Bonus: you don’t get stuck in one book for too long – ever start a Bible reading plan and end up getting stuck in Leviticus? When you read the Bible quickly, you read Leviticus in two days … which not only keeps you from becoming bogged down, but actually makes books like Leviticus fascinating and exciting to read.
2 Ways to Get Started
- Read like George Müller who would read the Old Testament one day (for however long he had available) and then the next day switch to the New Testament … then back-and-forth. This system allowed him to read the Bible more than 200 times in his lifetime.
- If you want to read the Bible through quickly in 60, 90, or 120 days … take the number of pages in your Bible, divide it by the number of days and it will tell you how many pages you need to read daily. For example, my Bible has 1590 pages from Genesis–Revelation, which means if I wanted to read the Bible through in 90 days, I’d need to read about 18 pages a day.

1 Bonus Idea
Consider listening to an audio Bible. I love listening to the Bible when I get up in the morning and get ready for the day. It allows my mind (even while it is waking up) to meditate and saturate in Scripture.
