Yesterday a friend of mine gave a devotional on the name Jehovah Jireh (God Who Provides). The Name appears in Genesis 22:14 when after Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac, God stopped him, provided a ram, and Abraham in reflecting on the event called the name of the place “The LORD will Provide” (Jehovah Jireh).
Many of us understand intellectually that God provides, but in the midst of busyness, difficulty, or pressure, we often forget this simple yet important truth – God provides.
Provision is an interesting word made up of: “pro” (before) and “vision” (to see) – literally “to see beforehand.” God sees beforehand and makes provision for the circumstance. It’s not that He necessarily changes the situation, but we can rest in the confidence and trust that anything we go through doesn’t take Him by surprise and that in the midst of any moment in life, He is Jehovah Jireh – God who makes provision for the situation.
I don’t know about you, but my last two weeks have been incredibly busy. We are nearing the end of our summer semester and just in the last two weeks I’ve taught for nearly 50 hours, not counting preparation, meetings, and other normal work and life activities (though you may have noticed I did pause the podcast and Ephesians video study). And yet, despite the busyness, God continually supplies, energizes, and provides all that I need each day. Personally, I’ve experienced His incredible provision these last few weeks and my love for Jesus only increases day-by-day.
May I encourage you to turn afresh to Jesus, Who will ALWAYS provide – not necessarily what we want but certainly what we need. If your spiritual life is growing weary, embrace Him. If your focus is off, turn it back to Him. If you are physically tired (I can relate!), trust that He will supply the energy and wisdom you need today.
Simply, may you freshly encounter Jesus today as the One Who has supplied all that we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
