When we behold God’s manifold grace, the only description we can use is that it truly is amazing. No wonder John Newton penned the famous lyrics: “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.”
In Lesson 13 of the Deeper Christian Bible Study Series in Ephesians, we examine Paul’s statement at the end of Ephesians 1:6 and examine what grace is and what it means for our lives.
You will discover that grace is more than a mere hug of forgiveness that God bestows but is, in reality, the empowerment to live the Christian life as grace finds its fulfillment in the person of Jesus.

God’s Amazing Grace
Ephesians 1:3-6 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him in love; He predestined us to adoption as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
- Titus 2:11 – “the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.”
- Jude 1:4 – “For there are some men who secretly crept in … who pervert the grace of our God into immorality.”

- Grace is Jesus Christ – the loving action, the unstoppable power, the extreme mercy, the unmerited kindness, the exemplary virtue, the unspeakable gift, and the perfect rescuing work of God upon the Cross (the historic event of all historic events). Grace is the Abundant Life of God made available in the Person of Jesus Christ.

- Scripture says God’s grace was given for …
- that we might labor more abundantly
- that we may have sufficiency in all things
- that we may abound to every good work
- for obedience to the faith
- as power for witnessing of the Resurrection of Jesus
- in order that we may lay foundations
- for preaching among the Gentiles
- as our means of help in time of need
- whereby we may serve God acceptably
- to make us perfect
- to establish us
- to strengthen us
- to settle us
- to save us
- to enable others to believe in Jesus Christ
- The term “graciously bestowed” is only used 2x in the NT and its really the verb form of the word “grace.” In essence, God has “graced us.” The other time this word is used is in Luke 1:28. The angel Gabriel comes to Mary, a young teenager, and is about to tell her that she is going to be pregnant and give birth to the Messiah. Gabriel says, “Greetings, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.”
