Happy Leap Year Day!
This day back in 1948 began like any other as a 39 year-old pastor named Richard Wurmbrand kissed his wife Sabina goodbye, expecting to see her at the church service starting in about a half hour.
He strolled through the morning Romanian streets, winding his way to the church as he pondered his sermon for that Sunday morning and the wedding service he would officiate later that afternoon.
Along the journey, a black Ford van pulled up, two men jumped out and grabbed Richard, tossing him into the back of the van and put a gun at his temple—now a captive of the secret police.
What could have been an opportunity for great fear became a time to remember truth. Richard recalled that “Do not fear” occurs exactly 366 times in the Bible, one time for every day of the year, including leap year (the day Richard was taken prisoner).
It was this message of “fear not” with the assurance that God was with him, that allowed Richard Wurmbrand to endure severe torture, disease, and a long separation from his dear wife.
As you celebrate this leap year, remember that God calls us not to fear and gives us the grace not to – a biblical reminder (and promise) even for today.
I’m cheering you on unto that end!
PS – if you haven’t seen the incredible movie on Richard Wurmbrand (Tortured for Christ) it is currently available to watch for free with Amazon Prime … and I also highly encourage you to read his story in the book by the same title: Tortured for Christ.
