At the end of each of the three blessing sections, the phrase “to the praise of His glory” is used. In Lesson 12 of the Deeper Christian Bible Study Series in Ephesians, we examine Paul’s statement and discuss what it means to live a life that is better than a Broadway musical—a life that is continually declaring forth the praise and majesty of the King of kings and Lord of lords. This in-depth study focuses primarily on Ephesians 1:6.

Passage: Ephesians 1:6
Better Than Broadway

Ephesians 1:3-6 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him in love; He predestined us to adoption as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace.”

  • to the praise of the glory of His grace
    • Used 3 times, at the end of each blessing section
      • Blessings of the Father – verse 6: “to the praise of the glory of His grace.”
      • Blessings of the Son – verse 12: “for the praise of His glory.”
      • Blessing of the Spirit – verse 14: “to the praise of His glory.”
    • “Glory” is the Greek word “doxa” (honor, majesty, brightness, renown, or magnificence) … but the word doxa can also be translated as “perspective” or “opinion.”
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
  • Psalm 24:7-10 – “Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!”
  • Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.”
  • Psalm 29:2 – “Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”
  • Romans 3:23 – “for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”
  • John 17:10 – “And I am glorified in them.”
  • Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
