Examine your prayer life and you’ll likely find that there are three things that you pray for most … and yet these three things God already wants to provide for you as your Good Shepherd.
In this Deeper Christian episode, Nathan Johnson gives an overview of John 10 and Jesus’ declaration that He is the “Good Shepherd” and what that means practically for you as Christ longs to provide and give you protection, provision, and direction.
God is the Good Shepherd (see John 10:11-15), and as a shepherd, He wants to give His sheep (ie: you) three important things—interestingly, the same things we typically pray for:
- Provision
- Protection
- Direction
While there is far more that God longs to produce in us (holiness, fruits of the spirit, etc), these three essential aspects of life are available because, as sheep, we trust and depend upon the goodness of our Shepherd.
The question is, will we turn our gaze, hear and recognize the “voice of our shepherd,” and actually know (ginosko) Him? (see John 10:15)

- John 10:11-15 – I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
- John 10:3 – The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
- Psalm 23:1-3a – The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.
