3 reasons why maps are important to your Bible Study

Deeper Christian Podcast • Episode 207

Bible maps are important to your understanding of Scripture!

Though most of us tend to ignore the geography, it is an important context to look up if we desire to gain a greater depth of understanding in what we study.

In this episode, Nathan Johnson examines three reasons why maps helps us in our Bible study and gives examples of how profound Bible geography can be in our study and understanding of God’s Word.

3 Reasons Maps Will Help Your Bible Study

  1. Helps you understand the geographical context.
    • Everything happened somewhere. Maps and geography help you see where things took place, what kind of location it is (desert, water, mountains, etc), distances traveled, and can give greater insight on the passages you read and study.
  2. Many passages presume you have a basic understanding of the geography.
    • For example, there is a parallel between the prophet Elisha and Jesus. See 2 Kings 4:8-37 and Luke 7:11-17. Shunem and Nain are on the same mountain (in essence the same location) and the emphasis is that Jesus is the greater prophet, come to fulfill all the Old Testament.
  3. It reminds us that the Bible is real and helps us visualize the locations.

One of the best ways to gain the depth of understanding of Bible geography is to use a Bible atlas (see recommendations below) and to actually visit the locations on an Israel Bible Study Tour.
