The word “delight” gives the idea of enjoyment, pleasure, to be satisfied, and to experience a thrill.
Psalm 37:3-7 declares …
Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and practice faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him …”
While Psalm 37 gives a promise if you delight yourself in God (He will give you the desires of your heart), it is important to recognize that we shouldn’t delight ourselves in God because we get something from Him.
We should delight ourselves in Him because of Who He is.
Just because of Him.
Not to get anything from Him. Not to appease Him. Not for any other reason but that He is worthy.
David writes in Psalm 16:11 – “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
It is only in His presence do we discover the fullness of joy – for true joy is found nowhere else.
Jesus declared in Matthew 6:33 to “seek first the kingdom of God” and not worry about “all these things” (clothing, food, etc).
Yes, there is tremendous promise if we seek after, diligently give ourselves to, and love God with ALL our heart, mind, soul, and strength (see Mark 12:30) – for we are told that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (see Hebrews 11:6).
God says “you shall seek Me and find Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).
The call is to all.
God responds to us when we seek Him (see Psalm 34:4), but we shouldn’t seek or delight ourselves in Him because we get something from Him – we don’t need Him PLUS anything. We just need Him.
Peter tells us that all things that we need for life and godliness is found in Christ Jesus alone (see 2 Peter 1:3).
So let us delight ourselves in Jesus afresh today. Let’s seek after Him with all that we are.
Not because we get something from Him … but because of Who He is.
I’m cheering you on unto that end!
