God can teach us a lot through the lives of others. This is one of the reasons I love reading Christian biographies.
I recently finished If I Perish, a story of a Korean woman mid-1900s who stood for Christ and was sentenced to a Japanese prison where her faith and testimony changed the lives of many.
In our pampered and self-indulgent culture, it’s often hard to read of a person who senses God’s call to go to prison, suffer, and perhaps die as a martyr—it’s convicting and confronts our preference for ease and comfort. The autobiography of Ahn E. Sook (Esther Ahn Kim) is a book that is not only engaging, but deeply convicting (and encouraging).
