There are a few men from Christian history who stir my heart every time I read their writings—and Major Ian Thomas is toward the top of the list.
What I absolutely love about Ian Thomas is the centrality of Jesus Christ in everything he preaches or writes. He continually returns to the focus that Jesus is to be everything in our lives, He should be the single focus, He should have the pre-eminence, He should be our life.
In Colossians 1:27, Paul declares that the hope of glory in our lives is “Christ in you.” And contained in those three simple words is the secret to living the victorious Christian life—it is not me who lives but Christ living His life in and through me (see Galatians 2:20).
In his book The Indwelling Life of Christ: All of Him in All of Me, Ian Thomas discusses how you can live free from sin, experience unending peace and joy, and how to actually live the Christian life.
The “secret” Ian Thomas shares is to allow Jesus to indwell your life. Jesus is the fullness of the Christian life and therefore truly the only one who can live it. Without Him, it is impossible to live the Christian life as we are called to—it only becomes a mimic, a self-production of the real thing.
I am continually stirred by Major Ian Thomas’s preaching and books—and this little book on the indwelling life of Christ is a powerful enunciation on how we can triumphantly live the Christian life … as all of Him lives in and through all of us.
