I typically don’t read a lot of fiction, and when I do it’s typically before bed (gotta love bedtime stories). Recently I read an incredible fiction book called A Lineage of Grace by Francine Rivers which dramatizes the lives of the five women mentioned in the lineage of Jesus—Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary.
Granted, these stories are fiction, but Francine Rivers used what we have recorded in Scripture and historical research of the culture and that time period in history, to craft a story that allows you to experience the human elements of emotion we often forget or skip over. These women, and the men in her similar book on five men called Sons of Encouragement, were like us—facing struggles, pain, emotions, hopes, fears, and the desire to know God.
While we must remember these stories are not Scripture, it breathed a freshness into some of my favorite characters in the Bible.
