Few books have the ability to grip the reader, bring tremendous illumination, conviction, and stirring of soul, and do it all within fifty pages. Such is the case for Amy Carmichael’s book God’s Missionary. It is as if Carmichael wrote the words with a dagger dipped in her own sweat and blood, for she not only sets a seemingly impossible standard for her readers but goes on to prove that such a life is possible by living the words she wrote.
The book can simply be summed up as an enunciation of Christ’s words: If you want to be My disciple, you must deny yourself [give up the right to yourself], take up the Cross, and follow Me. This too is a seemingly impossible standard, yet it is the call and demand of every Christian.
Amy Carmichael writes that as believers we are to be disentangled from the world, separated unto Jesus, and crowned (anointed) with love. We MUST have all three. Anything less is not Christianity. As Paul declared, we are to know nothing but Christ and Him crucified. May this be our sole desire and pleasure.
I cannot recommend God’s Missionary any higher. It is one of those books I read a couple times a year – it never grows old, in fact the words become more sharp, the depth becomes more rich, and God’s pressing upon my soul becomes all the more intense.
