One of the most treasured classics of AW Tozer is his rich and profound book The Pursuit of God. A sequel to Divine Conquest (now titled: God’s Pursuit of Man), this book captures the heart behind a full pursuit after Jesus.
Though we often crave and desire things outside of Jesus, Tozer examines our need and thirst for our Saviour. Tozer writes: “It is a solemn thing to see God’s children starving while actually seated at the Father’s table. This book is a modest attempt to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him.”
This book is in my top 25 favorite books of all time. For many years I had a prayer from the book posted on my wall which read:
O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
