I absolutely love a great Christian biography. My shelves are full of inspiring tales of individuals whom God used mightily for His kingdom throughout the centuries.
Amongst my favorites, there are a few that I return to again and again, almost like visiting a best friend. One such book is the biography of Samuel Logan Brengle. I’ve written about the book a couple times in the past (here and here).
Samuel Brengle was a gentle and humble individual whom God used to deepen the faith of countless thousands as he traveled the country as an evangelist for the Salvation Army when William Booth first started it. His biography is a powerful story of a man who gave up great fame and prestige to allow God to form deep humility within his life so that he might be used in greater measure for God’s kingdom and glory.
One of the things I greatly appreciate about Brengle is his love, passion, and focus upon Jesus. When God began to stir his life and capture his attention, Brengle said:
I saw the humility of Jesus, and my pride; the meekness of Jesus, and my temper; the lowliness of Jesus, and my ambition; the purity of Jesus, and my unclean heart; the faithfulness of Jesus, and the deceitfulness of my heart; the unselfishness of Jesus, and my selfishness; the trust and faith of Jesus, and my doubts and unbelief; the holiness of Jesus, and my unholiness. I got my eyes off everybody but Jesus and myself, and I came to loathe myself.
Though this biography is currently out of print, I am giving away two old (used) hardback copies. If you love the feel of an old hardback, the smell of ancient paper, with a tremendous story contained therein, then you’ll want to make sure you sign up!
It’s easy to sign up! Fill out the form below and you’re finished. Winners will be announced October 1.
